When distortion sets In

Some trends are so common that sin feels normal

There is so much distortion in youth culture today. How did we get here and how can we help them navigate in this darkness?

There is a huge problem in today’s culture. Youth are being sexualized more than ever. A current trend on social media is highlighting this in a really thought provoking way. In this current trend millennial users are splicing videos together showing images of current middle school girls and comparing them to themselves when they were in middle school. The trend is meant to be funny and make viewers giggle at how awkward or lame these millennials were back in the day.

However if we stop to think about it we can see how dark and distorted it is. Youth was once marked by innocence. Youth was once marked by lightheartedness. Our society was once one that protected children. Now we are seeing them sexualized. We are seeing record trends of sexual activity and sexual distortion in our youth today.

Currently U.S. adolescents are experimenting in more sexual activity than ever before. Things like same sex attraction, transgenderism, pornography and self-exposure are normal among teens and pre-teens. They used to be free from the weight and darkness of these things but now our team of leaders finds it rare to encounter a student whose not struggling with this distortion. These things are so rampant in culture that it seems normal.

So what can be done? What can someone like you do to combat the over-sexualization of our young people? You can pray. Right now take the time to cry out to God on behalf of our youth. Ask for God to protect them and redeem them. Ask for God to intervein and bring about a love for purity and holiness in our culture. Prayer is powerful and our students need it more than ever.
