Inside Their Stories

Sarah’s Story

What would you say to a girl who has lost hope?

What do you say when you sit across from a 13 year old whose father abandoned her and whose mother is incarcerated? What do you say when she tells you that her grandmother died and her grandfather is raising her reluctantly?

It is a tough question and it is even tougher when she says she doesn’t know if God is in her corner. Sarah has so many cards stacked against her. I really can’t blame her when she says certain things. Things like, “There isn’t a God. And if there is He certainly doesn’t care about me.”

It is so sad to think about a young life walking around with that point of view. Because we know the truth. We know that God created Sarah and is seeking her out. We know that He has plans for her. Plans to prosper her and not to harm her.

We are grateful she is continuing to attend Campus Life and summer camps. We are grateful she is open and shares how she feels. We are grateful for the chance to earn the right to be heard in her life.

Through the time spent sitting with Sarah, asking her questions and sharing truth we have seen growth. We have gotten her a Bible that she can read and understand. We have challenged her to write things she is thankful for and to remain open to God’s presence.

We know that in this world Sarah will have trouble. So what we say is “take heart for He has overcome the world.”
